Week 2 Story: The Turtle And The Geese

NOTE: I rewrote the story "Two Turtle Jatakas" as my own version

The Turtle and The Geese

There was a turtle with a broken shell. This turtle lived its whole life in pain. It had walked miles and miles to try and get to a doctor. Every-time the sun would shine on the broken shell it would burn the turtle's skin. In the winter the turtle would hide its neck in its shell but the snow would cause it frostbite. It would have to find something to hide under. At times it would become so depressed and anxious, but it persevered. It worked so hard to get to the doctor to get a shell transplant. One day in the spring the turtle was one state away from getting to its doctor. It worked so hard and was so close to its goal. It took a sigh of relief and joy. The turtle fell asleep under the tree.

A flock of geese were flying in the air. They saw the turtle lying down on the floor. They had heard of a turtle migrating towards the north to meet a famous doctor. A shell transplant had never happened before, and people were a mix of surprised and envious towards the turtle's strength. The striped turtles were known to put the green turtle down. The green turtle was hotheaded. It was not a hypocrite, nor did it deal with those who were not of honest nature. It was a very hardworking, patient, and persevering turtle. However, it did not take any nonsense from anyone. It was known for its upright and honest character.

The geese flew down to the turtle. The turtle smiled and told them how far it came and how much hard work it took them. Tears came into its eyes as it showed the geese its wound. A large red scab had formed in the place of the shell. The geese offered to fly it to the doctor. The turtle would have to hold onto a stick and stay quiet throughout the ride. It would have to fly several miles and was allowed to take breaks. They saw beautiful places on the way and at one point crossed a large lake. The turtle was scared to fall but it stayed quiet and patient throughout the ride. Then it arrived near the town of the doctor. People gathered and pointed towards the turtle. Some looked amazed and others gossiped. The geese looked ahead towards the destination and the turtle looked down. It saw some people point and laugh at it. The turtled rolled its eyes and moved forward.

As they got closer to the doctor's office, the turtle saw the striped turtled. He saw them snickering and whispering to each other. The turtles blood boiled. "What a wuss," said one. "Isn't that the cracked one?" asked another. The geese looked ahead at the office going faster and faster. The turtle was raging with anger. "It really must suck to be broken," said another striped turtle. The turtle looked straight down and yelled, "It must suck to feel so small and insignificant that you have you try and insult me to feel bigger." The turtle fell and landed on a rock. Its shell cracked and blood came flowing through. The turtle laid on the floor as the geese surrounded it and gasped. It saw the white striped turtle smile before its eyes closed forever.

  1. Hi Zille! I really loved how you added a twist to the story, but still maintained a meaningful ending. I really liked how you added the part about the turtle needing a “shell transplant”, I thought that was very creative. I also really liked how you emphasized the turtles hard work and patience in the beginning of the story, but towards the end you pointed out the intolerance the turtle had on gossip. Very well done!

  2. Hey Zille! I was really rooting for this turtle to make it to the doctor; you did such a good job writing about the turtle's suffering, and it was devastating to see the turtle die in the end after getting so close to a shell transplant. However, that just makes the moral of the story even more important! I wonder why the striped turtles are so mean; maybe you could expand on this in a future story!
